After considerable argument, they convinced Zelter of the feasibility of their plan, and, securing his promise of co-operation, went home to begin the arduous labors that such a performance entails on manager and conduc- tor. Opera is the drama's natural enemy; but it is also something essentially different from the drama and cannot be said to have merely swallowed it whole, as the wolf swallowed Red^Riding^Hood, The excellence of an opera does not depend on the degree to which it submits to 'reform.* That an opera cannot do without dramatic content and must not be a bare succession of beautiful musical numbers is certain.

The following episode has been paralleled in the history of several of the famous virtuosi: Lolli, a celebrated violinist of the last century, found, when he went to Stuttgart, a very superior player named Nardini.

The occasion on which I passed my- self off for the author, I received both protection and encouragement: 'It really was not bad for my age.' WHAT'S IN A NAME. 203 The day I played it under the name of Czerny I was not listened to; but when I played it as being the composi- tion of Beethoven, I made certain of the ' bravos ' of the whole assembly."

A few things came out of this performance: her exceptional involvement in recits/ariosos, crystal clear diction (a rarity these days) and the freeflowing coloratura (some gents at the back were very glad for the lack of aspirates in general). To punish her, the father declared he would make her learn to play the instrument she had tampered with. He gradually became well known as a composer but the French did not really understand him.
